Rare Arnhem gallantry medal group Rare medal group to T/Capt Philip Charles Aimers Sommerville of HQ 1st Airborne Division including his Bronze Star with citation for his actions at Arnhem between 17 - 25 September 1944. Medal group includes 39/45 star (named in typical ''Boots style''), France & Germany star (named in typical ''Boots style''), Defence medal, War medal (with entitlement slip) and Bronze Star which was awarded pursuant to the US/British medal exchange system. 50th Anniversary Battle of Arnhem medal in box, Norwich Lads Club (for boxing) badge, British Legion badge. Also included is his wife's War Medal in a separate tin with entitlement slip together with her ATS plastic cap badge and British Legion Women's Section badge. His citation for his actions at Arnhem is included (copy) and reads: "This officer is on the staff at Div HQ and took part in the operations at Arnhem, on the 17/25 Sep 44. On 20 Sep he was ordered to move south of the river LEK and contact troops of the 2nd Army who had reported to be in the vicinity of the river. The ferry in which he and another officer attempted to cross was destroyed by enemy fire a few yards out from the bank. He then swam back and got a small rowing boat. He covered a distance of some 10 miles on foot through an area which was occupied by Germans and, failing to find any British troops at ELST, he moved to a village EAST of DRIEL and lay up there until midday on 21 Sep. On the way back to the river he contacted elements of the Polish Para Bde who had just dropped and gave valuable information of our dispositions and of the general situation to their staff. He returned to the Div perimeter with the leading troops of this Bde. This officer displayed great devotion to duty and intiative of the highest order" I have described this group as a gallantry medal group. Capt Sommerville's were gallant however the US Bronze Star is officially awarded for "heroic or meritorious achievement". The citation is signed by Montgomery, Urquhart and Browning. Included is some research and a copy photograph of Sommerville after being evacuated after 25 Sep. Medal groups like this do not come up often and are the next best thing that most of us will be able own without spending ten of thousands of pounds on an Arnhem Military Medal or Military Cross group. This is the type of group I would usually keep but have been forced into selling to fund something else. Please email me with any questions.

WW2 63 Airborne Composite Company RASC Arnhem KIA medal group A very moving and important Killed in Action medal group to an experienced Air Despatcher shot down and killed over Arnhem on 19th September 1944. 63 Airborne Composite Company RASC served with distinction in WW2 especially so during the Normandy and Arnhem campaigns. This company lost the most number of Air Despatch troops during the two campaigns and was ultimately withdrawn on 20th September 1944. This medal group and condolence/entitlement slip belonged to 161755 Driver Richard Entwistle Ashton, 63 Airborne Composite Company RASC and attached to 299 Special Duties Squadron in WW2. From April 1944 they were responsible for dropping SOE agents and their supplies into occupied France. For The D-Day and Arnhem operations they flew a total of 624 sorties. For the Arnhem operation Ashton flew with Wing Commander P B N Davies (Commanding Officer of 299 Squadron) who was also killed on the 19th when their plane became engulfed in flames after taking on heavy flak. Three of the crew bailed out and survived, the rest sadly perished. WW2 Glider Pilot Regiment battle dress blouse Original battle dress blouses with their original wartime applied insignia are not common. And although there have been a number of recently discovered Glider Pilot Regiment shoulder titles on the market, I am more than confident that this is not one of these battle dress blouses which has had recently applied insignia. The insignia has been applied in a very special way using a criss cross style which was popular in the 1940s. It is firmly bedded in the blouse material and has clearly sat there for decades. This blouse is Canadian made and 1943 dated. There are embroidered cloth shoulder titles to both arms, embroidered Pegasus formations signs and Sergeant stripes denoting the rank of either 2nd Pilot or trainee 1st Pilot. Wing is absent to front of blouse which could have possibly been removed but I have left as is. Condition is very good and the size is large and usable for either a mannequin or possible wear. Comes complete with a Glider Pilot Regiment Christmas card in original envelope. Please email with any questions on this fine battle dress blouse. Name of soldier given to purchaser with obvious scope for more research.
